Tucked into southeastern Europe, the criminally underrated country of Bulgaria lies. A fiercely nationalistic country, Bulgaria has some of the oldest European history, stunning landscapes, and lively cities. To cap it all off, being a part of the EU but retaining their local currency means prices for westerners are low while safety and security are strong. In many of the cities, 40 Lev ($30CAD) can give you a great Airbnb or a cute pension in the country. Food is great with a heavy focus on meat and spices with a restaurant dinner for 2 costing roughly 30 Lev ($22CAD) for a main and a drink each. Best of all, beer is super cheap and is sold in 2 or 2.5L bottles! A train and bus system chug slowly around the country facilitating travel albeit at a slow pace.
